Audi Club is excited to share visuals from this week’s qualifying. Please take a moment to review our blog post on this year’s race preview. Additionally we have the pleasure of sharing an interview with Open class participant, Alex Kim, published in the June 19th Unfair Advantage and quattro News.
For Audi Club, this year’s Pikes Peak race is especially meaningful as one of our own members and longtime chapter volunteers, Rob Wilmoth, makes his rookie appearance in the Time Attack 1 division. We look forward to cheering him on and sharing his Audi Club and motorsports journey in upcoming publications.
Stay tuned to Audi Club’s weekly news updates, social media channels, and the Q4 issue of quattro for additional coverage of the 104th running of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Audi Club staff will be on-site throughout race week capturing photos and stories, bringing members exclusive behind-the-scenes coverage from America’s Mountain.
Qualifying Day 1
Tuesday June 16 – Participants were greeted with sun and cool temperatures on the first day of practice. The 12.42 mile course was divided into three sections: Lower, Middle and upper. Each division was assigned to a section of the course which rotates throughout the week of qualifying. The Lower section served as the event’s qualifying sector.
ACNA Rob Wilmoth and his 2018 RS 3 achieved a 5:01:002 Personal Best, competing in the Time Attack 1on the lower section. David Hackl with his 1983 Quattro had a sixth best overall for the day on the upper-section, Open division, with Matus Huska following close-behind with a near ten second time difference.
Qualifying Day 2
Wednesday June 17 – Strong winds added a layer of challenge to participants on the second day. The lower section hosted the Open and Ultra4 USA divisions. The middle hosted the Time Attack, and the Upper section included both classes, as well as the Pikes Peak GT4 Trophy.
Hackl achieved seventh place for the day on the lower section in his 1983 Quattro while Colorado-based Trevor Aweida was just two positions behind in his 1984 4000. Matt Huska and Christian Ghimbos followed closely behind but finished mid-pack in the Open division.
Qualifying Day 3
Thursday June 18 – Due to an accident on the upper section, Rob Wilmoth was only able to complete one and half runs on the upper section. Despite this, his team had the opportunity to test out any changes before the weekend.
More testing, practices and qualifying will resume tomorrow, June 19th. To stay up to date on the qualifying and results, please follow Pikes Peak News, or follow on socials.
