Audi e-tron GT Road Version Test Mule Finally Spied

When Audi revealed the e-tron GT little over a year ago, it did so suggesting that the road car would strongly resemble the production car. And while many car manufactures make such claims, Audi actually has a track record for doing just that.

Earlier ICE Audi models like the first-generation Audi TT, the Pikes Peak concept that eventually became the Q7, the Le Mans concept that eventually became the R8, and even the e-tron concept came out darn well close to what was inevitably revealed to be the e-tron road car.

Even still, the e-tron is set to be based on the corporate J1 platform. That’s the same architecture as the Porsche Taycan. So while the Taycan has proven quite a cool car in its own right, the production version wasn’t quite as low and menacing as the Mission E concept car that precluded its arrival.

It appears that, in the case of the e-tron GT, we must wonder no longer. Spy photographers caught the first mule of the upcoming exotic e-tron while winter testing in colder climates.

Earlier rumors suggested the e-tron GT would bow in the fourth quarter this year. That puts it on the market in 2021 by our math. Whether or not the e-tron GT comes to market with the same power levels as the Taycan remain to be seen, but given Audi sources have suggested “R8-like pricing”, we’re going to guess it will.

The other question on our minds is this. We’ve already seen long roof variants of the Taycan testing, both “Sport Turismo” style (Avant in Audi speak) and “Cross Turismo” style (allroad in Audi speak). Given Audi’s long lineage of high performance wagons, can an e-tron GT Avant be far behind?
