Goodwood Green

Words and Photos by Chris May

If you’re an automotive enthusiast—let alone an Audi aficionado—the name Goodwood likely carries immediate significance. Perhaps you know it best as the namesake of one of Audi’s most iconic paint colors: Goodwood Green. Like many of Audi’s heritage paint options, it pays homage to a historic racecourse. In this case, the Goodwood Circuit, located on the Duke of Richmond’s estate in Chichester, West Sussex, United Kingdom. With a racing history dating back to 1948, the site has hosted a wide variety of two- and four-wheel racing series over the years and continues to operate today.

It likely needs no introduction, but since 1993, one of the most celebrated automotive events near the circuit has been the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS). For enthusiasts on this side of the pond, social media feeds are flooded each year with images and videos of historic racecars and new models charging up the hay bale-lined hill climb at this iconic multi-day celebration of all things automotive.

If you follow the annual internet buzz around FoS, you’ll know the hype is relentless—fueled by content creators, media outlets, and automakers alike. Having never attended before, we were admittedly Goodwood “green” ourselves. Ever the skeptics, our expectations were tempered. Could this signature event really live up to the accolades? And honestly—how much better could Goodwood FoS be than Monterey Car Week?
