Fueled by Competition: Racing Is Steering Audi’s Next Chapter

A recent article by Sharp Magazine highlights the importance of Audi’s racing success and how it translates to their road cars. With the Audi Formula 1 debut inching closer we think it is a good time to look at how wins on the track lead to wins in the showroom. 

Audi will be the first to admit that they need to get back on track as a company. Some of their most iconic models are no longer on the market and they have lost a bit of their identity recently. That identity is of an automaker that builds world-beating race cars. Audi needs to lean into that racing heritage to win on Sunday and sell on Monday.

Historic Audi Racing

With Audi about to enter the pinnacle of motorsport and planning on rejuvenating their portfolio of production vehicles, now is the perfect time to reestablish that connection. From 2000 through 2014 Audi won Le Mans an astounding 13 times. The beloved R8 supercar drew inspiration from the Le Mans-winning race cars. Can you imagine what type of road car a Formula 1-winning Audi might give us? 

Of course, Audi’s racing heritage extends well beyond the Circuit de La Sarthe. The legendary quattro all-wheel drive system that defines who Audi is today was born from the Audi quattro that dominated rally racing in the early 1980s. The Ur-Quattro was born and Audi and their fans never looked back.

Recent Racing History

Want more recent racing history? In 2024 Audi won the Dakar Rally with an RS Q e-tron. The RS 3 LMS won the TCR European Endurance and TCR Italy championships. In GT4 racing Audi used a R8 LMS GT4 to win the FFSA GT4 France Pro-Am and GT Sprint Challenge GT4. The Audi R8 LMS GT3 dominated all over the world including winning the Dubai 24 Hours, Nürburgring 24 Hours, British Endurance Championship and GT Sprint Challenge GT3. And this is not even a comprehensive list. Suffice to say Audi is still a successful racing manufacturer before even entering Formula 1.

How will this be translated to Audi road cars of the future? We don’t know yet for sure. EVs will likely be a larger part of the picture given the current focus on that technology. But regardless of the power source, we have seen how Audi can build world-beating road cars from their world-beating race cars. Audi has won with gasoline, diesel and electricity.
