Audi Tests New A2 e-tron EV on Frozen Lakes and Bavarian Backroads

Audi is preparing to bring back the A2 nameplate, but this time the quirky compact car is returning as a fully electric model. Set to debut in fall 2026, the new A2 e-tron will serve as Audi’s entry-level EV and play a major role in expanding the brand’s electric lineup. Before it officially arrives, however, Audi engineers are putting the prototype through an intense testing program across Europe.

Announced during Audi’s Annual Media Conference by CEO Gernot Döllner, the A2 e-tron represents another step toward the company’s long-term electric future. The camouflaged prototype is already racking up miles in some of the harshest environments imaginable, from frozen lakes in Scandinavia to high-speed wind tunnel testing in Germany.

Winter Testing

Audi recently sent the A2 e-tron to Lapland in northern Sweden for extreme winter testing. There, engineers evaluated the EV’s battery performance, thermal management systems, and overall driving dynamics in icy temperatures and snow-covered conditions. Frozen lake test tracks and slippery roads allowed the development team to fine-tune the interaction between the electric drivetrain, suspension, and brake systems. Audi says the goal is to ensure the small EV still delivers the same confident driving experience customers expect from the brand.

Aerodynamics are also a major focus for the new EV. The A2 e-tron’s sloping roofline is designed to improve airflow efficiency, and Audi has been refining the design in its Ingolstadt wind tunnel facility. The advanced tunnel can simulate wind speeds of up to 300 km/h while analyzing aeroacoustics, thermal stability, and airflow around the vehicle.

Real-world testing is continuing in Bavaria’s Altmühl Valley, where steep inclines, rough pavement, and tight corners help engineers dial in the suspension and driver assistance systems during everyday driving conditions.

The production version of the A2 e-tron will be built at Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt. Audi says the EV will help rejuvenate its lineup and provide a more accessible entry point into premium electric mobility as the company continues its aggressive EV expansion into 2026 and beyond.
