Audi F1 Team Leaves Austria Encouraged Despite Missing the Points

At first glance, the Austrian Grand Prix might look like a disappointing weekend for the Audi F1 Team. After all, neither Nico Hülkenberg nor Gabriel Bortoleto cracked the top 10, leaving Spielberg without adding to the team’s points tally. But if you’ve been following Audi’s Formula 1 journey since the opening race of the season, you’ll know there’s a much bigger story unfolding.

Week after week, the Audi Revolut F1 Team continues to close the gap. Reliability has improved, race execution has become sharper, and perhaps most importantly, the pace is becoming increasingly competitive. Austria didn’t produce the headline result fans were hoping for, but it did provide another encouraging sign that Audi’s long-term plan is moving in the right direction.

Just Missed Points

Gabriel Bortoleto came agonizingly close to scoring his first Formula 1 points, bringing the No. 5 Audi home in 11th place after a well-executed race. Starting on the soft compound before switching to medium and hard tires, the rookie spent much of the afternoon battling established midfield teams and showed impressive consistency throughout the race.

Veteran Nico Hülkenberg crossed the finish line in 12th after a medium-medium-hard strategy. While the final result wasn’t what he had hoped for, Hülkenberg noted that the R26 had stronger race pace than several of the cars around him. Unfortunately, starting farther down the grid meant that pace wasn’t enough to break into the points.

The Positives

One of the biggest positives from Austria wasn’t the finishing positions, it was how cleanly the weekend was executed. Audi’s strategy calls were solid, both pit stops were completed without drama, and the team maximized the package it brought to the Red Bull Ring. Those are the kinds of details that often separate midfield teams from championship contenders over time.

Racing Director Allan McNish echoed that sentiment after the race, saying the team leaves Austria encouraged by the progress it continues to make. It’s a reminder that Formula 1 success isn’t built overnight. Every race weekend provides another opportunity to learn, improve, and gather valuable data as Audi develops both the car and the organization around it.

Looking Ahead

That steady progress has become one of the defining themes of Audi’s inaugural Formula 1 campaign. Earlier in the season, simply finishing races consistently was an accomplishment. Now the conversation has shifted toward qualifying performance, race strategy, and extracting the final few tenths needed to fight for points every weekend. For Audi fans, that’s an exciting evolution to watch.

With the British Grand Prix at Silverstone up next, optimism continues to grow. The iconic high-speed circuit will present a very different challenge from the Red Bull Ring, but it also offers another chance for Audi to demonstrate just how quickly the program is maturing.
