1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2: The Group B Legend Heads to Bonhams Auction Block

The Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 is one of the most revered Group B rally cars ever built. Only 20 of them were ever made. This restored 1985 example will be crossing the block at The Quail Auction by Bonhams.

Over the years Audi has produced some truly iconic cars. But if we were forced to rank them all, it would be hard to put anything ahead of the Sport quattro S1 E2. The 1985 Audi Sport quattro S1 E2, chassis RE10 will be offered at one of the most prestigious auctions in the world next month. The car was built to compete in the brutal world of Group B rally racing. It has since become the poster car for the series.

The 2.1L turbocharged 20-valve inline 5-cylinder engine spits out more than 500 horsepower to all four wheels. The car is festooned with massive wings and ducts to help reduce lift over jumps and keep the engine cool. Those features were effective and have the side benefit of making the car look amazing.

The car being offered at Bonhams is one of just four believed to compete in a World Rally Championship event and remain in private hands. This particular car not only competed but led the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally with World Champion Hannu Mikkola at the wheel.

The current owner purchased the car in 2022. Since that time has had the power steering pump repaired, a new Pyrotec fuel cell installed along with new fuel pumps and filters. And a comprehensive electrical restoration was also performed. All total over $200K in work was done by specialists at AI Design in Tuckahoe, New York.

There is no pre-auction estimate available for this car. However, when it was sold last in 2022 at the RM Sotheby’s auction in London it brought over $2.4 million. Buy your Powerball tickets now. The auction is scheduled for Friday, August 15.
