With extensive experience and a solid foundation of Performance Hardware and Software offerings for the 4.0TFSI EA825 engines, Unitronic Engineers recalibrated the BOSCH MG1 ECU with total boost regulation control, optimized ignition timing, lambda, camshaft timing and much more. Research and development continued with further dyno and road testing while closely monitoring running conditions through high-speed data logging tools and equipment to ensure maximum performance is achieved, while maintaining complete OEM-like reliability and drivability.
AVAILABLE HARDWARE UPGRADES
Thanks to our strategic partnership with CSF Race, direct-fit High-Performance Intercooler Systems are now available for the (4M) SQ7 and SQ8 platform in Raw Billet Aluminum or Black Thermal Dispersion finish. Through Unitronic Performance Software development, it was quickly apparent that the factory intercoolers were inefficient and incapable of supporting the demands of a tuned 4.0TFSI EA825 engine. Our friends over at CSF, partnered together with PWR in bringing Formula-1 performance to the automotive aftermarket with their CSF’s High-Performance Intercooler Upgrade System. Unitronic opted to put the product to the test with its sights set on delivering increased efficiency, resistance to heat soak even through the most grueling and demanding conditions, together with superior cooling performance.
The most important feature of the CSF High-Performance Intercooler Upgrade is the PWR intercooler core. CSF’s strategic relationship with PWR has allowed the inclusion of this core, which is unlike any other available for the 4M SQ7 and SQ8. Throughout all in-house testing and validation, the CSF High-Performance Intercooler Upgrade System for the 4M SQ7 and SQ8 delivered on its promise of drastically reduced Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) with Unitronic Stage 1, Stage 1+ and Stage 2 ECU calibrations.
• 3mm tall, rolled tubes with turbulated inner fins maximize the dissipation of heat from the charge air flowing through the pressure side of the intercooler core
• The 4.85mm tall multi-louvered fin is the most efficient fin in the high-performance industry, with performance similar to PWR’s Formula-1 grade race intercooler cores
When analyzing intercooler performance, it’s important to not only consider maximum cooling abilities, efficiency, and resistance to heat soak, but also recovery time. The CSF High-Performance Intercoolers performed optimally in nearly all demanding conditions. The OEM intercoolers start to exhibit heat soak and run-away increases in IATs almost immediately when combined with increased boost levels and demands of a tuned vehicle, which then triggers the Bosch MG1 ECM found on the SQ7 and SQ8 to begin applying corrections which subsequently lowers performance.

Optimized Responsiveness, Smoothness, Drivability, and Comfort
Unitronic’s ECU calibrations are engineered to improve engine response and reduce low-end lag. Unitronic’s Performance Software has gained worldwide recognition and is well known for its broad powerband, with smooth power delivery, maximizing responsiveness and “area under the curve”, under normal and hard acceleration.
Ignition Timing Precisely Calibrated for Higher Octane Fuel
Engine calibration optimized to take advantage of higher fuel quality to extract maximum energy from the combustion. Therefore, when using a higher octane fuel, more power and better fuel efficiency will be achieved.
Standing RPM (soft) limiter increased from 3k to 5k RPM
Once the vehicle has reached FULL operating temperature, it can be revved to a maximum of 5k RPM in Park.
Optimized Maximum Output
Unitronic’s ECU Calibrators deliver the maximum power output while staying within the operational limits of the factory engine and drivetrain components. Specifically, this results in the highest engine performance without sacrificing the reliability of the engine, turbocharger, or other engine and drivetrain components.
Factory Safety Limiters Retained
OEM “fail safes” are retained within the ECU calibration. Close monitoring of all operation parameters ensures that engine operation stays within factory components limits, resulting in reliability.
Power Delivery Perfectly Optimized Throughout the Power Band
Aligned with the OEM strategy, the calibration is designed to offer a large flat torque plateau to provide a smooth and linear power band. Maximum torque output is achieved sooner and maintained longer which creates a broader torque plateau and greater area under the curve. This results in an improved acceleration and optimal engine operation.
Speed Governor Removed
Vehicle speed limiter within ECU is removed. (Subject to transmission rotational speed limit.)
Improved Fuel Efficiency
Optimized timing and injection in cruising condition allows for an improved fuel efficiency, under normalized driving conditions.
