What a great event!

Starting off the tech event we watched short historical video of Auto Union’s pre-war Grand Prix development and racing success. This transitioned to Audi’s development of the Iltis military vehicle, beginnings and development of the ur-quattro in 1980, adding the Audi 90 IMSA GTO and ending with the V8 DTM race cars.

Next up was an explanation of the Audi quattro drivetrain. David used his 1991 Audi 90 20v quattro track car project and the removed drivetrain as a hands-on quattro explanation device, very clever. Starting off at the front of the powertrain is a 7A 20 valve 5-cylinder engine ready for a rebuild, down to the Torsen center gearbox and ending with a lockable rear differential. The garage has an über cool vibe with every factory Audi Sport poster you would ever want. His selection of Audi books is off the chart too, including a rare edition of Jürgen Lewdanowski’s Audi sport quattro book.

Chiming in at the end of the Tech Session, Thompson Smith described the benefits of being able to help owners diagnose current Audi models using the VCDS software OBD-II tool. Some discussion about required hardware to run the software (a simple PC laptop fitting the required specs from Ross-Tech is needed). Thompson also provided a live Auto-Scan of his 2016 SQ5 for interested members to view a basic idea of how it works. An optional OBD-II software diagnostic tool was also discussed, OBD Eleven as an alternative for owners that don’t want to purchase a dedicated PC laptop, but rather use their iOS or Android mobile device [see https://www.ross-tech.com  for VCDS and / or https://obdeleven.com].
