As part of its its plan to realign model designations, Audi has already confirmed that the next A4 sedan will be renamed the A5 Sportback. A new A5 Sportback test mules has been spotted doing road testing in southern Europe, revealing more details ahead of its official unveiling, likely later this year.

One of the more notable differences between the current A5 Sportback and this new model visible in these shots is the absence of the frameless door glass that gave the former a more coupe-like appearance. We can also see a larger rear hatch. Up front, the new A5 gets a familiar facial treatment to the Avant on which it’s based.

The new Sportback will likely share its powertrain options with the Avant, including gas and diesel (though not in North America) options with mild hybrid assistance. Full plug-in hybrids will also be a available, and we’re counting on S and RS variants to follow as well.
