Find of the Day: This $95K Audi A8L TDI Is Now a Tempting Luxury Bargain
Depreciation can be painful if you’re the person buying a new luxury car. But if you’re shopping for that same car a decade later, it can be your best friend. Case in point, this 2016 Audi A8L TDI currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer. It carried a whopping $95,095 sticker price when new, but you won’t have to pay nearly that much to buy it today. And it is a ton (actually about two and a quarter tons) of car for the money.
This car has everything you want but can’t necessarily get in a brand-new Audi sedan. Classic Audi styling inside and out combined with the much-loved TDI engine under the hood. And even a decade after it rolled off the assembly line, the A8L still has plenty of luxury touches to keep you happy.
Finished in Oolong Gray Metallic over Titanium Gray leather, this long-wheelbase A8 has traveled approximately 73,000 miles. More importantly, whoever originally ordered it apparently wasn’t shy with the options. The car has the Executive, Luxury, Rear Seat Comfort, and Driver Assistance packages, helping explain that nearly six-figure original price.
The resulting equipment list includes adaptive air suspension, adaptive cruise control, four-zone climate control, Bose audio, a panoramic sunroof, an Alcantara headliner, and heated and ventilated seats front and rear. Rear passengers even get power-adjustable massaging seats and power sunshades. In other words, this is still a seriously luxurious place to spend a long road trip.
Under the hood is arguably what makes this particular A8 even more interesting. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 produces only 240 horsepower, but its 406 lb-ft of torque is much more important in a big luxury sedan. An eight-speed Tiptronic automatic sends that power through quattro all-wheel drive.
Of course, there are reasons to approach any inexpensive former flagship with caution. The listing notes curb rash on several of the 20-inch wheels, and the rear sunroof shade is currently inoperative. More importantly, while depreciation has made the A8 affordable to purchase, it hasn’t magically made its complicated luxury-car hardware inexpensive to repair.
But that’s also what makes this car so tempting. For around the price of a well-used economy car, you could be sitting behind the wheel of a long-wheelbase Audi flagship with quattro, diesel torque, and an options list that would still look impressive today. Bidding ends on Tuesday, September 15.
