Find of the Day: The Audi R8 LMS GT3 That Raced Across Asia
We don’t often feature cars from overseas in our Find of the Day series. However, few race cars capture the spirit of Audi motorsport quite like the R8 LMS GT3. Built to take Audi’s mid-engine supercar to the world’s most competitive GT racing series, the R8 LMS quickly established itself as a winner. Introduced for the 2009 FIA GT3 European Championship, the car traded the road-going R8’s signature quattro all-wheel-drive system for rear-wheel drive to comply with GT3 regulations. Power came from a race-prepared version of Audi’s 5.2-liter V10 producing nearly 500 horsepower, paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The formula worked. By the time production shifted to the updated R8 LMS Ultra in 2012, the model had accumulated more than 100 victories worldwide, including the FIA GT3 European Championship, a class win at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, and overall victories at both the Spa 24 Hours and Bathurst 12 Hour.
What makes this particular example offered by RM Sotheby’s even more special is its fascinating history. Chassis 0323 was one of the cars used during the inaugural Audi R8 LMS Cup in China, a single-make championship launched by Audi in 2012. To help raise the profile of the series, Audi enlisted Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok, one of Asia’s famous “Four Heavenly Kings.” Known throughout the region as a singer, actor, and performer, Kwok was also a passionate racer who competed in all ten races that season behind the wheel of this very car.
Racing History
Following the conclusion of the Audi R8 LMS Cup season, the car was handed to another Hong Kong racing star, Marchy Lee. As the winner of the inaugural championship, Lee was awarded the opportunity to campaign the car in the highly competitive GT Asia Series alongside his brother Jeffrey as an official Audi-supported entry. The car went on to compete against Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches across Asia, earning a victory at Japan’s Autopolis International Circuit during the 2012 season.
After years of competition in regional racing events throughout China, chassis 0323 was purchased in 2024 and shipped to the United Kingdom. There, it underwent a comprehensive restoration and race preparation by Pursuit Racing. More than £94,000 ($126,000) was spent returning the car to race-ready condition and restoring its 2012 GT Asia Series livery. Since completion in the summer of 2025, the car has accumulated only test miles.
