Find of the Day: De Paoli Dakar Monster quattro on Cars & Bids

We’ve covered this Frankenquattro before, and ran the story of its ’86 Paris-Dakar run on the blog yesterday. We did that in part because we saw Cars & Bids has offered it up for sale and likely timed with the 2024 Dakar Rally to get attention. So, if you’ve wanted to own a highly unique piece of quattro history, this car may very well fit the bill.

Spoiler alert: Underneath, it’s not really a quattro at all. In the early 80s, the go-to Paris-Dakar platform for privateers was the Range Rover, and Italian car customizer Franco de Paoli set about building his quattro from the proven Range Rover hardware. It wears some Audi parts, including custom fiberglass bodywork, but its drivetrain is Range Rover including 3.5-liter V8.

This particular chassis was fielded by Franco de Paoli in the Paris-Dakar in 1986 and 1987, and has done some other competitions. It was also restored in June 2021.
