Auditography Has a Message for Audi: Save the Five-Cylinder

Some engines simply provide power. Others become so closely associated with a brand that it’s difficult to imagine one without the other. For Audi, few engines have done more to shape their identity than the five-cylinder. Now, after 50 years, its future is uncertain, and Auditography is asking Audi fans to make sure the company knows how much the engine still matters.

In a new 15-minute film, Auditography looks back at five decades of five-cylinder Audis while making an emotional case for keeping the engine alive. The story began in 1976, when Audi introduced a 2.1-liter five-cylinder in the Audi 100. The configuration offered more power than a four-cylinder while remaining more compact than a six.

But it was motorsports that turned the unusual engine into an Audi icon. Turbocharged five-cylinder power combined with quattro all-wheel drive helped transform rallying, while cars including the Sport quattro cemented the engine’s reputation. That lineage eventually continued into modern performance cars such as the RS 3, TT RS, and RS Q3.

Can Audi Keep It Alive?

Today, the five-cylinder survives in Audi’s lineup only in the RS 3. Auditography argues that upcoming Euro 7 regulations could finally bring its run to an end, because continuing production would require Audi to invest in updating the engine and its emissions systems.

Importantly, the video says the decision isn’t final. Auditography claims Audi’s new CEO, CTO, and head of Audi Sport understand the engine’s historical significance and are pushing to keep it alive while the company evaluates whether the necessary investment makes financial sense. That’s where Audi enthusiasts come in.

Auditography is asking fans, owners, collectors, and even Audi employees to speak up and explain what the five-cylinder means to them. The argument is that this isn’t merely another engine Audi can replace without losing something in the process. Its distinctive 1-2-4-5-3 firing order and unmistakable soundtrack connect today’s RS 3 directly to some of the most important cars in Audi history.

After half a century, the five-cylinder has earned its place in Audi history. Auditography’s message is simple. Don’t let that history end yet.
