The automotive world seems determined to convince everyone they need an SUV. But Audi has another idea. What if you could have the practicality, all-weather capability, and comfort of an SUV without actually driving one? That’s the argument behind the new A6 allroad, and after spending some time behind the wheel, Carwow’s Mat Watson is convinced Audi might be onto something.

In fact, Watson was so impressed that he placed the A6 Allroad in Carwow’s highest recommendation category: just buy it. That’s high praise considering he also had some complaints about the vehicle.

A6 Allroad driving

Let’s start with what makes the allroad special. Watson tested the 3.0-liter V6 diesel producing 299 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Sadly, it is unlikely that we will ever see that engine here in the U.S. The test car was paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, it propelled the wagon from 0–60 mph in just 4.9 seconds during his testing. Not bad for something designed to haul the family and their luggage.

Standard adaptive air suspension provides an exceptionally comfortable ride while allowing the driver to raise the vehicle for additional ground clearance. Rear-wheel steering also comes standard, making the lengthy wagon surprisingly maneuverable around town. Watson was equally impressed with its handling on twisty roads and reported approximately 36 mpg in his real-world testing, converted from British gallons.

There are some complaints, however. Watson wasn’t particularly impressed with certain interior materials, the abundance of touch-sensitive controls, or the voice assistant that occasionally interrupted him without being summoned. trails some competitors. He also noted that the 16.5-cubic-foot cargo area trails some competitors.

Then there’s the price. The A6 allroad starts around $94,000 (£70,000) in the UK, but Watson’s heavily optioned test vehicle exceeded $121,000 (£90,000). That’s enough money to buy a lightly used RS6.

Despite those shortcomings, Watson praised the A6 allroad’s combination of driving dynamics, comfort, practicality, and powerful diesel engine. He ultimately called it one of the best Audis currently available.

Unfortunately, this latest A6 allroad isn’t offered in the United States just yet. However, we are expecting it to be available in 2027 as a 2028 model. It should do quite well here as it sounds like exactly the sort of wagon American Audi enthusiasts would love. And judging by Watson’s verdict, perhaps we really don’t need another SUV.
