Audi Reconsiders End Date for Gas-Powered Models

Originally committed to ending internal combustion engine (ICE) production by 2033, with a shift to EV-only sales starting in 2026, Audi is now reevaluating its timeline. CEO Gernot Döllner recently confirmed that combustion engine models may remain in production until 2035 or beyond, depending on customer demand.

While EV momentum continues, Audi reported a 30.1% year-over-year increase in electric deliveries in Q1 2025, some combustion models like the upcoming A5, A6, and Q3 will likely continue well into the 2030s. A more affordable EV in the A3 segment is expected to arrive next year, aimed at expanding the brand’s electric footprint.

This strategic shift reflects broader industry trends. Mercedes-Benz has similarly walked back EV-only plans, while BMW never set a firm ICE phase-out date. As regulatory landscapes evolve and EV infrastructure develops, Audi appears poised to balance both powertrains well into the next decade.
