Audi R8 Rumored For a Possible Rebirth as a PHEV Supercar in 2027
News from Autocar reports that Audi is bringing back the legendary R8 as a next generation platform partner to the Lamborghini Temerario. Slated for a late 2027 debut, the next-generation R8 will be a plug-in hybrid supercar, marking a major evolution for the brand’s halo model.
Once again developed alongside Lamborghini, the new R8 will share key components the Temerario. Expect a coupe and convertible, both engineered for a balance of high performance and everyday drivability. Under the hood, the new R8 will likely feature Lamborghini’s twin-turbocharged 4.0 liter V8, producing a staggering 789 horsepower before being boosted by three electric motors to a total of 907 horsepower.

This shift to hybrid power marks a new era for the R8, departing from the naturally aspirated V8 and V10 engines of its predecessors. The high-revving nature of the new V8, however, ensures that signature supercar soundtrack remains. The R8’s return aligns with Audi’s broader electrification strategy, positioning it as a showcase of performance hybrid technology. The name “R8 E-tron” is reportedly under consideration, blending the model’s supercar legacy with the brand’s electric future.
With an all-new aluminum space frame for added rigidity and a refreshed design team shaping its look, the next-gen R8 is poised to be a statement piece for Audi. Whether this will be the R8’s final evolution before full electrification remains to be seen, but for now, signs are looking good for seeing a continuation of the most successful halo car ever made.
