When it comes to automotive safety, most of the attention is focused on preventing accidents or protecting occupants during a crash. Airbags, crumple zones, automatic emergency braking, and countless other technologies have made modern vehicles safer than ever. But what happens in the seconds immediately following an accident can be just as important. And that’s where the Audi Q7 has just made history.

According to Audi, the Q7 has become the first production vehicle to achieve a perfect 100 percent score in Euro NCAP’s post-crash safety assessment. The luxury SUV also earned an overall five-star safety rating, but it’s the perfect post-crash score that makes this achievement particularly noteworthy.

Post-Crash Safety

Unlike traditional crash tests, which evaluate how well a vehicle protects occupants during an impact, the post-crash assessment examines what happens afterward. Can emergency responders quickly locate the vehicle? Will occupants be able to escape? Can rescue personnel safely reach anyone trapped inside?

The Q7 incorporates several technologies designed to address these concerns.

Its automatic emergency calling system can alert emergency services following a serious collision, helping reduce the time it takes for assistance to arrive. The vehicle also provides rescue information that can help first responders understand its construction and safely access occupants.

Another important feature is the multicollision brake. Following an initial impact, the system can automatically apply the brakes to help prevent the vehicle from rolling into another obstacle or becoming involved in a secondary collision.

Euro NCAP also evaluates whether doors can still be opened and seat belts released after an accident. These might seem like relatively minor details compared with airbags and crash structures, but they can make an enormous difference when occupants need to escape or emergency personnel are working against the clock.

Nobody wants to discover firsthand how well these systems perform. But the Q7’s historic result demonstrates that Audi is thinking beyond the initial impact. After all, surviving a crash is important. Getting out safely and receiving help quickly can be just as critical.
