Audi Previews Its Formula 1 Future With the R26 Concept

A few days ago, Audi teased us about a major Formula 1 announcement. We speculated about what that announcement might be, but the speculation is over as Audi lifted the curtain on the story. Their 2026 Formula 1 car, the Audi R26 Concept will focus on clarity just like future production models.

“By entering the pinnacle of motorsport, Audi is making a clear, ambitious statement,” says Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. “It is the next chapter in the company’s renewal. Formula 1 will be a catalyst for the change towards a leaner, faster and more innovative Audi.”

Timeline to Victory

The head of Audi promises that the team isn’t going to be satisfied as a backmarker. He wants the team to win, but he is also realistic about it and doesn’t expect the Audi F1 Team to walk away with the championship in 2026.

“We are not entering Formula 1 just to be there. We want to win. At the same time, we know that you don’t become a top team in Formula 1 overnight. It takes time, perseverance and tireless questioning of the status quo. By 2030, we want to fight for the World Championship title.”

Design Philosophy

For a bit of context, the Haas F1 team joined in the 2016 season and their best ever result was fifth in the Constructor’s Championship in 2018. This year they are currently eighth, just ahead of the Kick Sauber team that will become Audi next year. So, if Audi is battling for the top spot by 2030, that would be quite an accomplishment.

As we mentioned earlier in the week, we didn’t expect the livery of the F1 car to be revealed today, but we were hoping to see the color scheme. That is exactly what we got. The final car design will be revealed in January. But what we know now is that the race car will follow the same new design philosophy we saw with the Audi Concept C. The R26 Concept will follow the four design principles: clear, technical, intelligent and emotional.

Color Palette

“We are implementing a unifying design language that draws together every aspect of our organization,” says Audi Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella. “This makes the Formula 1 project a pioneer for the new brand identity, which will be rolled out in the future both for the F1 team and Audi as a whole.”

The color palette features titanium, carbon black and the newly introduced Audi Lava Red. The Audi F1 car will also sport red rings to underscore its Formula 1 presence. That will likely become a popular aftermarket mod for the Audi enthusiasts.

Vorsprung durch Technik

Audi is going to use F1 as a stage to demonstrate “Vorsprung durch Technik” to the world. “Formula 1 is more than just motorsport,” says Jürgen Rittersberger, CFO of AUDI AG. “It’s entertainment, emotion, technology – and also a challenge. But it is precisely this combination that takes us where we want to go: inspiring new customer groups for Audi. With the enormous reach of Formula 1, we have the opportunity to attract new customers for our brand – especially in the younger target group, where Formula 1 is experiencing rapid growth.

Audi’s entry into Formula 1 builds on a long legacy of motorsport innovation. From pioneering mid-engine race cars to quattro all-wheel drive rally cars and hybrid and electric powertrains at Le Mans. Audi views F1 as the ultimate testing ground for technology, where rapid development and open competition drive breakthroughs in performance, electric mobility, and sustainable fuels. With sweeping new regulations coming in 2026, Audi sees the timing as the perfect opportunity to join the sport on equal footing with established teams and shape the future of motorsport.
