Audi enthusiasts have been asking the same question ever since the final R8 GT rolled off the assembly line: when will Audi build another supercar? Today, the company finally has an answer.
With the unveiling of the Audi Nuvolari, the brand with the four rings is returning to the supercar segment in dramatic fashion. More than just a successor to the beloved R8, the Nuvolari represents a bold new chapter for Audi. Limited to just 499 units worldwide, the hybrid-powered flagship delivers a staggering 1,001 PS (987 horsepower), a top speed exceeding 350 km/h (217 mph), and serves as a rolling showcase of the technologies that will shape Audi’s future. In many ways, the Nuvolari is more than a new car. It is a statement.
A New Era for Audi
The launch arrives during a period of significant change for Audi. The automotive industry is evolving faster than ever, with manufacturers facing increasing competition, rapidly advancing technology, and growing pressure to innovate. Audi’s response has been a sweeping transformation that includes a new design philosophy, a renewed focus on performance, and its highly anticipated entry into Formula 1. The Nuvolari stands at the center of that strategy.
“In times of fundamental change, we are making bold strategic decisions,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. “The Audi Nuvolari brings pure emotion and performance to the road. It also reveals how we are taking Vorsprung durch Technik into a new era.” For enthusiasts who have worried that the future of performance cars would become increasingly sterile and disconnected from emotion, Audi appears to be sending a different message.
Inspired by a Racing Legend
The new supercar takes its name from Tazio Nuvolari, one of the greatest racing drivers in motorsport history. Known for his fearless driving style, relentless determination, and remarkable ability to win against seemingly impossible odds, Nuvolari became a legend during the early years of Grand Prix racing. By reviving the Nuvolari name, Audi is clearly signaling that this vehicle is intended to embody the same spirit of innovation, courage, and performance.
It also revives a name that many Audi fans will remember from the stunning Audi Nuvolari quattro concept revealed in 2003.
Formula 1 Technology Meets the Road
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the Nuvolari is how heavily it draws from Audi’s Formula 1 ambitions. According to Audi Board Member for Technical Development Rouven Mohr, the Nuvolari is the brand’s first supercar to feature a high-performance hybrid powertrain. While detailed specifications remain limited, Audi has confirmed that the system produces a combined 987 horsepower, making it the most powerful production vehicle the company has ever built. The car also introduces several advanced technologies, including active aerodynamics and the world’s first quattro predictive ride system.
Audi says the predictive suspension system actively adjusts vehicle dynamics before the car encounters changes in the road surface, improving both handling and stability. Combined with sophisticated active aero systems, the result should be a supercar capable of delivering extraordinary performance while maintaining the confidence-inspiring character Audi owners expect. The vehicle also features Audi’s latest Space Frame architecture paired with a carbon-fiber exterior structure, helping reduce weight while maximizing rigidity.
A New Design Language
The Nuvolari is also significant because it becomes the first production vehicle to fully showcase Audi’s new design philosophy. Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella describes the approach as one focused on reduction, clarity, and purpose. Rather than relying on unnecessary styling flourishes, the Nuvolari’s design is characterized by clean surfaces, precise lines, and a powerful, monolithic stance. Every element serves a functional purpose while contributing to the car’s dramatic visual presence.
The interior follows the same philosophy. Audi says the cabin has been designed around the driving experience, combining advanced technology with premium materials and a focused, driver-oriented layout. In other words, Audi wants the Nuvolari to feel as special from behind the wheel as it looks from the outside.
Exclusivity Guaranteed
Audi is making no attempt to position the Nuvolari as a mass-market performance car. Production will be limited to just 499 examples worldwide, making it one of the most exclusive vehicles the company has ever produced. Deliveries are expected to begin during the first half of 2027. That rarity is intentional.
“The Audi Nuvolari stands for exclusivity, performance, and the ultimate in desirability,” said Audi Board Member for Sales and Marketing Marco Schubert. “With this model, we are making a deliberate move into the high-performance segment.” For Audi enthusiasts, the significance of the Nuvolari goes far beyond its performance figures. It marks the return of an Audi halo car at a time when many manufacturers are abandoning traditional enthusiast vehicles altogether.
The R8 may be gone, but Audi’s passion for performance clearly is not. With nearly 1,000 horsepower, Formula 1-inspired technology, and a production run limited to just 499 units, the Nuvolari isn’t simply replacing the R8. It’s redefining what an Audi supercar can be.
