Audi Has Never Built an SQ3 but That Might Be About to Change

Audi has built plenty of fast Q3s over the years, including the wonderfully excessive (but never sold in America) five-cylinder RS Q3. But somehow, through multiple generations of its compact SUV, there has never been an SQ3. That appears ready to change.

A virtually undisguised prototype has been spotted testing in Spain, and while it might still be just a development mule, one detail at the back is difficult to ignore, four exhaust pipes. That’s traditionally a pretty reliable indication that you’re looking at an Audi S model.

The new SQ3 should slot neatly between the regular Q3 lineup and the performance territory previously occupied by the discontinued RS Q3. Visually, expect the usual Audi S treatment, including sportier exterior elements and an S-specific interior. But those four exhaust outlets should provide the easiest way to distinguish the SQ3 from lesser Q3 models. More interesting is what could be powering it.

The SQ3 is likely going to use a version of the Volkswagen Group’s familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. That engine makes about 333 horsepower in other applications, giving us a reasonable idea of where the new Audi might land. Output could potentially climb higher, although Audi will presumably want to leave some breathing room below the 400-hp figure produced by the previous RS Q3. Should a new RS Q3 come to fruition, it might get the beloved 2.5-liter five-cylinder, but we are getting ahead of ourselves.

The SQ3 is reportedly expected to reach showrooms during the second half of 2027. Considering this SQ3 test mule is wearing almost no camouflage, we would expect a formal announcement from Audi soon.
