More than two decades after the original Audi A2 challenged conventional thinking about lightweight, aerodynamic design, the compact hatchback is back. The A2 e-tron sets a new efficiency benchmark for the brand. According to recent testing the A2 e-tron is the most efficient Audi of all time. Preliminary testing reveals an energy consumption rate of 12.8 kWh/100 km based on WLTP measurements.
The original A2 was ahead of its time. Introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year, it featured an aluminum space frame, impressive aerodynamics, and exceptional fuel economy. Although it was never sold new in the United States, the A2 developed a loyal following in Europe and remains one of Audi’s most innovative production cars.
A2 e-tron Builds On Original A2 Philosophy
The new A2 e-tron builds on that legacy by applying modern electric vehicle technology to the same philosophy. Rather than chasing ever-larger battery packs and higher horsepower figures, Audi’s engineers focused on reducing energy consumption through lightweight construction, improved aerodynamics, and highly efficient electric components. With the optional efficiency package the A2 e-tron sports a drag coefficient of 0.24, the best in Audi’s compact lineup.

Unfortunately for American Audi fans, there are no plans to bring the A2 e-tron to the United States. However, the technologies found in the A2 e-tron could eventually find their way into future Audi electric vehicles that will be sold here.
The A2 may never come to our showrooms, but its mission hasn’t changed. More than 25 years after the original debuted, it once again serves as a reminder that true innovation isn’t always about adding more.
