Audi A8’s Next Chapter Unclear as Brand Reconsiders Flagship Strategy

Take a look at the Audi A8 pictures we have here. Is it a 2026 model? A 2025? 2023? 2020? It’s tough to tell isn’t it? That is because the flagship Audi sedan hasn’t changed a whole lot in the last few years. This D5 generation A8 has been with us since 2017 with only a mild refresh in 2022. And as reported by Motor 1, it doesn’t look like we will be getting a new one any time soon either.
A spokesperson told Automobilwoche, the company is still “looking for a platform for a possible successor.” Still looking for a platform? Yikes. Audi has ruled out another facelift for the A8, as it requires a new platform to meet tightening regulations. With EV adoption lagging, launching a fully electric successor is considered risky. Reflecting this caution, Porsche also reversed plans to debut its upcoming three-row SUV as an EV, opting for combustion engines first.
What Will Audi Do?
So, what is Audi going to do? They are already lacking a true halo car with the R8 gone. They can’t let their luxury sedan fold too, can they? “We are thinking intensively about when we will launch the successor to the A8 and which drive technology is the right one,” Audi Head of Technical Development Geoffrey Bouquot told Automobilwoche. That means at this point no one even knows if the next A8 will be gas, hybrid or EV.
Audi is expected to decide soon on the A8’s future. Even if a new gas-powered model is approved, it likely won’t arrive before 2029, creating a gap after the current A8 ends in 2026. By then, the fourth-generation A8 will be nine years old, that is considered outdated, if not downright ancient, for a luxury flagship.
While Mercedes-Benz and BMW are planning updates to their top luxury sedans for 2026, Lexus is killing their LS sedan. Could Audi do the same to the A8? We hope not, but at the same time, it seems like there will be at least a few years without the top Audi sedan in the lineup.
