VW Tests Most Powerful Golf R Yet at Nürburgring
The current VW Golf R makes a healthy 328 horsepower and can rip to 60 mph in about 4 seconds. It is a thrilling hot hatch that can give much more expensive cars a run for their money. It appears that nipping at the heels of dedicated sports cars is no longer good enough for VW. A new, more powerful Golf R variant was recently spied testing at the Nürburgring.
This new Golf R version is easily distinguished by its revised front bumper and cooling vents cut into the hood. Rumors have it that this car could be pushing 350 horsepower to all four wheels. That would make it the most powerful Golf R in history.
350 horsepower is still not Audi RS 3 territory, but it is inching ever closer. And it is not just the power that is reportedly getting a bump. A closer look at the spy shots reveals what appears to be brakes that are larger than those on the current Golf R.
If you really zoom in, you will also notice that this test car is fitted with a rollbar. This car is clearly being pushed hard at the track, so a roll bar makes sense from a safety perspective. It could also indicate that VW is going for a Nürburgring lap record.
Lap record or not it is exciting to see a more powerful Golf R ripping around the track. As soon as we learn more about this new performance model, we will be sure to share it with you here.
