Win a Legend.
1985 Audi “ur” quattro Coupé

The 2022 Audi Club Spring Sweepstakes, for the first time, offers a vintage Audi as its grand prize, an iconic Audi quattro rebuilt and augmented to be the ultimate driver and roadgoing variant of the rallying icon.

The quattro

Audi Club is offering our most iconic prize ever. The Audi quattro Coupé, also known as “ur quattro” (German for “original quattro”) is the car that started it all, launching the Audi brand’s long history with all-wheel drive and asserting the four rings as a rallying legend. This 1985 specimen painted Zermatt Silver Metallic was originally built to U.S. specification, making it the penultimate evolution of the ur quattro sold in the United States. This particular car has been professionally augmented even further, with 20-valve AAN-code 5-cylinder engine built to produce over 300 hp, sport shocks and springs, Porsche brakes, RECARO seats and more. These components combine to make this quattro true to original form, yet a more capable and reliable for ultimate driving enjoyment.

Hagerty Classic Insurance for the Ur quattro

When you own an iconic classic car like our Audi Club North America Spring Sweepstakes Grand Prize 1985 ur quattro, proper insurance is a very important part of the experience. Values of classics, especially so-called “rad era” 80s cars are most definitely on the rise, and the Audi quattro is definitely subject to these increasing valuations. To insure we were covered to the extent we needed, we turned to classic car insurance provider Hagerty.

Where once Hagerty was just a leader in classic car insurance, the brand is quickly positioning itself as synonymous with a much broader commitment to preserving of the automotive hobby. Insurance is just the start, now operating their Hagerty Driver’s Club with associated magazine, the classic car peer-to-peer DriveShare app platform, the event registration platform MotorsportReg, notable events such as The Amelia Island Concours and now brick and mortar Garage + Social facilities for car storage and car enthusiasts. Hagerty’s brand growth and diversification has been most impressive, though it’s their original offering of classic car insurance that grabbed our attention early on in our temporary ownership of this 1985 quattro.

Why Hagerty versus the same insurance company one might use for a daily driver? While insuring a classic car may seem largely the same as insuring a daily use car, that’s not really the case. For starters, their proficiency in the space means they have a much more accurate read on vintage car values. Asking a traditional car insurance  provider the value of a 1985 car and you’ll likely find it’s undervalued, meaning should an accident happen then the car is more likely to be written off and totaled. And as if the thought of that happening to your classic isn’t bad enough, a lower valuation means the payout in such a case likely wouldn’t afford you a replacement in this price-growth centric market even if you could find one.

Even better, agreed-upon values are something very familiar to Hagerty. You set the price you see your car as worth and they’ll insure it. While you may be even ahead of the high-growth market in your expectations, Hagerty is willing to adjust for that and can adjust with associated adjustable premium in their app or user login area of their website. And when they see the market changing, they’ll even send you suggestions for adjustment when they spot a trend.

Since our quattro is currently owned by Audi Club, its insurance is about to switch to a corporate policy so we can register it for the road to prepare for the brief moments it must be driven during its stay with us. Initially though, when we first purchased the car, we wanted to get it under a policy quickly and so added it to the personal policy of our Executive Director who has four vintage cars insured with Hagerty. This brief pivot until we got the corporate insurance policy in place gave us an experience more like a typical owner might get.

Since classics insured with Hagerty need to be securely stored inside and not be daily drivers, experienced owners of classics will tell you that it is with multi-car policies where you save money. The first couple of cars are where the real cost is, then adding more cars such as this being the fifth on this particular policy, the addition of another becomes a very reasonable proposition.

Another advantage of Hagerty for Audi Club North America members is a 5% discount benefit on insurance. The discount hadn’t yet been applied to this particular policy, so the quattro was added with value set to the acquisition price at the same time the Audi Club discount was applied. Here’s where the power of the multi-car discount really appeared, as adding this fifth car to the policy and the Audi Club discount at the same time saw the total price of the policy actually go down!

By the time you read this, the car will have been moved to the more necessary corporate policy so that we can get it properly titled, but we definitely felt it worth sharing this very positive experience with Hagerty.

Upgrade: RECARO Expert Seats for that Sport quattro Cockpit Look

ENTER SWEEPSTAKES HERE.

One of the unique aspects of the 1985 Audi quattro procured for the grand prize of Audi Club North America’s Spring 2022 Sweepstakes is that its original seats had been replaced at some point with more bolstered units from RECARO. As a tastefully built driver, upgrades of this nature aren’t uncommon, but with these we saw an opportunity for improvement.

Most enthusiasts know the RECARO name, a brand whose seat business alone stretches back decades. RECARO is also a longtime supplier of seats for premium Audi models, from the shell seat option in the current R8, and regularly over the generations in RS cars.

Audi Sport quattro

In the 1980s, RECARO supplied shell racing seats to the Audi Sport factory rally program, while its Orthoped style “split bolster” seat was standard fare in the highly limited and highly desirable short-wheelbase homologation special Sport quattro. It is that latter iteration that inspired our choice for upgrading our Sweepstakes’ 1985 ur quattro.

Why an upgrade? Frankly, the seats in the ur quattro are already very good. For RECARO spotters, they are the Trophy model seat fitted by Volkswagen in OEM applications for the Mk2 GTI and Jetta 16V models, and also the Rally Golf. It appears that at some point a previous owner of the quattro procured a set of quattro-specific RECARO seat bases and these OEM spec Trophy seats. Earlier examples had vinyl outer bolsters, and grey fabric panels in the center. These appear identical to those early GTI 16V seats, but the centers have been recovered artfully in perforated black leather. It’s a handsome look that you’d be hard-pressed to notice aren’t factory Audi fitment, but Audi never fit them and the perforated panels didn’t match the rear seat. Also, a notorious wear point on those vintage Trophy seats was the 80s era foam of the driver’s bolster. Ours was sagging, as is common of well-used Trophies from that period. We wanted to make a change, and having the RECARO seat bases already in the car meant finding another set of RECARO seats was a major opportunity.

Walter Röhrl

RECARO themselves have a great new Classic Line of seats, offering several of their iconic models with period-looking fabrics… and all approved by none other than Audi rally legend Walter Röhrl. Current offerings range from their Classic LS, Classic LX and Classic Pole Position shell style racing seat that’s closer to what would have been in the rally cars of the time. When the line first launched, it also included their Expert model, with the same split style bolster as the roadgoing Sport quattro. And while the Expert is no longer offered with vintage Houndstooth style fabric, it is offered in back leather… black leather that would be the perfect match for our quattro.

RECARO EXPERT (Leather)

This all made our choice relatively easy. We opted to upgrade from vinyl to full leather to closer match the OEM quality of the original and now long-gone factory seats in our quattro, and also match the rear seats and door panels. Once they arrive, they’ll give our quattro the perfect Sport quattro inspired look. With noting, the photo of RECARO Experts seen here in a Porsche 993 feature Alcantara centers. We went with all black leather, more like the other shot on white background seen in this story.

RECARO EXPERT (Alcantara)

We’ll admit, we were tempted to find a set of the Expert Houndstooth seats RECARO had been making. We can see them in stock at various RECARO distributors. However, RECARO mentioned they were being phased out, and Audi never offered houndstooth fabric in the quattro, so we decided to stick with keeping it close to what the factory would have done. Our readers have definitely underlined our need to stay close to factory on the car, so that’s exactly what we did here.

Seats ordered, our biggest challenge now is awaiting their arrival. Our order was fairly special with the upgraded leather, so we now need to wait for them to arrive from Germany. For now, check out more on RECARO Automotive HERE and also ENTER our Audi Club North America Spring 2022 quattro Sweepstakes HERE.

Key Upgrade: Formawerx Open Spec DTM Keypiece

When it comes to vintage car ownership, enhancing components a driver handles, touches and feels on a daily basis are a key way to enrich the ownership experience. And, while any number of companies can sell you high traffic touch point components such as steering wheels, seats or shift knobs, nobody’s ever taken a run on augmenting the experience of the simple key. Enter Formawerx.

Back when cars like our 1985 Audi quattro were built, and most of the time since, the original Audi key was about the best you could hope for. Lesser quality keys could be have at the corner hardware store, but these were all likely steps down from the plastic-headed OEM original. Worse, new-old-stock OEM keys are expensive and hard to come by. Whether you need a spare key or simply are looking for an upgrade, Formawerx has conceived a solution that is exceedingly stylish. Even better, they use the best materials, CNC machining out of block material for watch-like precision, look and feel that is far, far from the humble nature of a 1980s era key.

This California-based firm of designers, including some with Volkswagen Group experience, hit the scene several years ago with key designs specifically for Porsche owners. They’ve steadily been expanding their portfolio of uniquely designed keys to other models including the classic Land Rover Defender, Mazda RX-7, Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan GTR.

Late last year, Formawerx dropped their new Era lines keys, featuring three different key head design paired with “OpenSpec” blades, effectively offering a range options that allow drivers of most pre-2000s cars to build something unique. With three different head designs, three different head finish finishes, two different blade finishes and engraving available, owners of cars like our ’85 quattro can spec a key unique to their tastes and/or their particular car.

Of the three main designs offered in the Era series, we were drawn to the German-inspired “DTM” design. Reaching out to Formawerx, we learned that their team was very open to creating a special set of keys for our very special quattro and thus enhancing the ownership experience of the winner of this car.

What’d we order? You’ll have to wait and see, but we’ll be sure to photograph them with the car just as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, head on over to Formawerx website to check out more of their incredible product line.
