In a significant move for the Audi Formula 1 project, Sauber has announced plans to establish a UK-based technical centre ahead of Audi’s official entry into the sport in 2026. This expansion aims to strengthen the team’s influence within F1 and enhance its ability to attract top-tier engineering talent.

Historically, Sauber has been one of the few F1 constructors headquartered outside of the UK, with its primary operations based in Switzerland. However, with the majority of Formula 1 teams operating within motorsport’s “Silicon Valley” in the UK, the challenge of recruiting experienced personnel has been a notable hurdle. To address this, Sauber will now establish a presence in the UK, joining Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Racing Bulls, Haas, Alpine, and Williams in this motorsport hub.

Mattia Binotto, COO and CTO of Sauber Motorsport, emphasized the strategic importance of the expansion: “We are excited to establish our technical centre in the UK to complement our key site in Hinwil, which will continue to lead our main engineering operations and experience the largest team growth. Expanding into the UK allows us to remain close to one of the world’s most dynamic motorsport ecosystems. Our vision is to create a strong, collaborative network across Hinwil and the UK, driving innovation and performance.”

Sauber is currently evaluating locations for the new facility, with potential sites near Bicester, Silverstone, and Milton Keynes. The goal is to have the technical centre operational by summer 2025, further solidifying the team’s preparations for Audi’s highly anticipated F1 debut in 2026.
