Remembering the Audi TT With Two Engines and a 244 MPH Top Speed
[Source: CarBuzz]
The Audi TT was a groundbreaking car for Audi and the automotive industry as a whole. It had a style unlike any other car on the road. And as the years passed, the TT got more powerful and became more of a true performance car. However, Audi never built anything as insane as the MTM TT Bimoto. A recent article from CarBuzz, reminds us of just how wild the MTM TT Bimoto was.
Motoren Technik Mayer (MTM) is a German tuning company. They have been around since 1990 and are still churning out some impressive Audi-based vehicles. But the MTM TT Bimoto stands out even in this company. It was equipped with two 1.8L 4-cylinder engines. Each engine had a pair of turbochargers and was good for 370 horsepower, or roughly 740 horsepower combined. But with the boost turned all the way up, over 1,000 horsepower was possible.
0 to 60 mph sprints happened in just over 3 seconds. But it was the top speed that put this car in the record books. In 2003, at the Nardo test track the MTM TT Bimoto hit 232 miles per hour. In 2007, the car returned with the boost up and the output eclipsing 1,000 horses. This time is hit an incredible 244 miles per hour.
It is reported that development of this car exceeded half a million euros and the company planned to produce ten examples for the public. Unfortunately, those cars were never built. So, only one MTM TT Bimoto exists today. It is not clear where that car is being stored.
While the development cost of the MTM TT Bimoto may be high, consider what you need to spend to get another car capable of 244 mph. A Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse can do it, but it will cost you well over $2.5 million. When viewed through that lens, the modified Audi is a downright bargain.
