Next-Gen Audi RS 6 To Provide V8 and EV Powertrain Options
Big news from Autoblog reports that the all-new Audi RS 6 is set to debut next year, and for the first time since 2009, it’s returning as both a wagon and a sedan. But that’s not the only twist, Audi is going all-in on powertrain options, offering both a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version with a twin-turbo V8 and a fully electric RS 6 e-tron.
For U.S. Audi enthusiasts, this could be one of the most exciting RS 6 generations ever. The hybrid version is expected to build on the current 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (621 hp, 627 lb-ft), with an electric boost pushing it well over 700 hp, potentially up to 750 hp, based on similar setups used in Porsche’s Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. This could give Audi the firepower to compete directly with the BMW M5 PHEV (717 hp) and the next generation of Mercedes-AMG’s E63 S.
Meanwhile, the all-electric RS 6 e-tron, already spotted testing in the Alps, is expected to ride on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) and produce around 670 hp. That number may seem conservative, but it’s reportedly a strategic move to avoid overlapping with the flagship RS e-tron GT, which makes a staggering 912 hp.
Audi hasn’t confirmed whether both powertrains will be available in both sedan and Avant body styles, but the potential for four different RS 6 variants, ICE, PHEV, EV, sedan, and Avant, means more choice than ever for U.S. buyers. Stay tuned for more as Audi prepares to unleash its next-generation super sedan and superwagon.
