Just a few days after the most recent round of Pirelli World Challenge competition at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will arrive at this weekend’s SprintX round of the GTS category ready to continue their championship fight in to the historic Lime Rock Park, located in Lakeville, Connecticut. Following two wins in as many weekends of the series, the combination of Alex Welch and James Sofronas will once again be joined by George Kurtz and Colin Braun with their pair of Audi R8 LMS GT4 machines, as well as a new addition Jason Bell, also in an Audi.
“Lime Rock is always one of the most demanding events on the calendar,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Growing up in the New York area, Lime Rock always acts as sort of a homecoming for me. I’ve been racing there since 1994, and in such it’s always a venue we always set high expectations for. The tight confines always lead to on-track excitement, which with our championship fight is going to be critical to not get caught up in. I couldn’t ask for a better teammate in Alex, who has been a huge part of this effort. Being joined again George and Colin of course doubles our chances for a big weekend. George continues to show pace every weekend he runs, and with Colin they’re an incredible duo. Jason Bell is a late addition but a welcome one, as he’s shown a lot of talent in past races and we hope to demonstrate what our program is all about.”
Driving the No. 14 Mobil 1 / The Thermal Club / 5.11 Tactical Audi R8 LMS GT4, Alex Welch and James Sofronas will once again return to the cockpit after a winning weekend together in Virginia. With victory in the first two SprintX weekends, the duo currently lead the points championship, but with six races remaining there’s plenty on the table.
In the No. 04 CrowdStrike Audi R8 LMS GT4, George Kurtz and Colin Braun will return in search of continued results. Running some of the most competitive times in the category, the twists and elevations of Lime Rock Park should suit their machine well, with their first podium of the season firmly in sight.
“Last year, I came close to a podium finish at Lime Rock,” said Kurtz. “This year, I’ll have Colin as my co-driver which is a big asset for the No. 04 car. I know we can lay down some fast lap times, so it’s just a matter of working with the team to employ a smart strategy for this track.”
A late addition, Jason Bell enters the team as a previous winner in GTSA competition. A veteran of karting and SCCA competition, Bell moved up to the Pirelli World Challenge ranks in 2017, taking a victory at VIRginia International Raceway and earning multiple top-fives.
“I’m really excited to join GMG,” explained Bell. “At every event in 2018, they have been at the front of the field and are committed to winning. They have knowledgeable staff, high quality mechanics and experience that is second to none. With other drivers in the program, I will be able to better myself with the use of their data and feedback and can’t wait to get to Connecticut.”
Practice for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Lime Rock will begin on Friday, May 25, with a double-header of action scheduled for Monday, May 28.
