For February the Gulf Coast Region will try something new. Many of us are into cars, obviously we belong to a car club, we drive Audis, we often take to the open road but we also enjoy dabbling in photography with various degrees of success. Of course, photography is much easier now with digital cameras and smartphones but still the tenets of composition, lighting and a host of other terms can present a challenge when recording our many adventures and exploits behind the wheel. With this in mind, I thought a photo exhibit at the St Pete Museum of Fine Arts, “The Open Road” might be of interest. This exhibit, and I quote, “explores the photographic road trip as a genre. The exhibit traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the mid-1950’s to present day” The Open Road . Plans are to meet at the museum at 10:00 on Saturday February 11th, take a tour then proceed to the Hofbrauhaus for lunch. Additional information and RSVP is below.
On March 4th Audi Tampa will sponsor a Tech Session on keeping one’s car finish showroom shiny. After the tech session brunch will be served. This is the same day as Reeves Motorsport Cars and Coffee but will start about 9:15 at the Audi Tampa Service Center. RSVP information to follow in next months newsletter.

We are presently at approximately 450 members across the state with three operating regions and one common denominator an interest in things Audi, and yes there are actually a number of us who do not own Audis. As members, our interests are as varied as we are and only limited to our time to be involved and the depth of our pockets. I doubt that there is not one of us out there that does not pine at times for perhaps one or two models up, faster, a generation or two newer or older, not to leave out those that never made it across the pond and the list could go on and on.
As the ACFL moves into 2017, the club consists of the three operating regions: First Coast led by Kerry Green, [email protected], Gold Coast led by Andreas Regalado, [email protected] and Gulf Coast led by myself, Bob Greving, [email protected]. We are looking for input regarding what members would like to help plan and execute with regard to events. These events can range from meetings at car shows, auctions, (Barrett Jackson), meals at local “Diners, Dives and Drive Ins”, Tech Sessions at dealerships, Fun Runs, even as a group a track day at Daytona in December, etc. I am sure you get the idea. What we sorely need is your support, input and interest in the planning and executing of events for members and the club. At some point the reliance on just a small nucleus of folks to plan and execute meets and drive the club, results with fewer events and going forward things become stale. It is ironic that when we were at less than 200 members statewide, our active participation was significantly higher.
Sebring is just around the corner and tickets will be going on sale soon. It was not that many years ago that this was one of the seminal events for the ACFL chapter. Especially when the wooden floor was added to the tent on Turn 17 and the first year for the two story structure at the Audi Turn One Club. Tickets for this event were very reasonable and would consistently sell out within minutes. The racing was always first class and the club even ran it one year when Audi did not field a team; we used the Audi suit 7 over the pits. I believe tickets for those four days including food and beverages were $150 or $175. We did not serve Filet Mignon that year but we did have lots of prosciutto and mellon and great “race food” with the help of Pete Zajac and his brother to keep us well fed. Well unfortunately things have changed, no more prototypes, no more diesels, no more LeMans team drivers, but I believe the same boys from Bluffton, SC (those guys are the best) are still catering, the swag continues to improve and Andy as usual will insure the venue will be a first class experience. And one last item. I recently received the following from Andreas Baensch, who many will remember was one of our BoD members. Andreas is now back in Ingolstadt, driving an Audi A6 Avant TDI, enjoying the Leber Käse but not the cold and snow of the German winter. Looks like some of the fellows in Audi Quattros wanted to help a truck make it up a hill in the snow and ice. Enjoy!
