FixxFest

Join us at FixxFest on Saturday November 16th being held at the Bradenton Motorsport Park. Activities start at 10:00 am, with the ACFL sponsoring a Corral for Members. As a special treat for participants, there will be an Audi “Old Timer”. The German term used for cars such as the 1935 Audi Cabrio joining us thanks to the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum. Their completed restoration below recently graced the lawns of Amelia Island.

Some may remember when a decade ago we celebrated the 100th Birthday party for Audi in 2009 held at the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum and first we saw this car. It had recently been acquired, literally from just down the interstate in its un-restored state below. What an unbelievable in-house executed transformation and the rebirth of this exquisite classic.

This speaks volumes to the skill in literally combining engineering that becomes progress that eventually transforms into art, perseverance; commitment and specifically one individual’s vision and drive as exemplified and realized in the collection of the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum of truly significant and unique iterations of the automobile.

If you plan to participate & park in the ACFL corral, I will need your name, ACNA number and car description no later than November 9th. This will allow us to plan appropriately for parking. Please email Bob Greving [email protected] with that information.

The club will be firing up a communal 22” Webber type charcoal grill from 11:30 to 2:00 for folks to cook their brats, burgers, and franks but be sure to bring your cooking utensils.

First Place Trophy ACFL 2019 FixxFest Show and Shine
compliments of Audi Clearwater

This competition will be spirited. Frankly, we are looking for the best of the best so make sure your engine is detailed, door sills are cleaned, inside wheel rims are polished and tail piles sparkle if they are chromed. All contestants’ cars must have at least 5,000 miles on the odometer.

The ACFL will have our tent erected and will be selling and renewing memberships to ACNA. Also, it is planned that one will be able to purchase sweepstake tickets for ACNA’s car; rumor has it that it will be the winner’s choice, either an e-tron SUV or an Audi RS 5 Coupe or Sportback. Of course, we will have our black chapter license plate holders for sale. We are looking forward to your participation in this fun event.

The Audi Club Show & Shine at FixxFest

For those of us who find enjoyment in keeping our Audi immaculately clean and polished before taking them out of the garage and take pride in its ownership, here is an opportunity to show off the results of your efforts. We know there is the occasional chip on the front hood or fascia and for those that are daily drives this cannot be avoided but the swirls of automated car washes certainly can. Yes, we keep the engine bay, door jambs, trunk all spotless and sparkling just as she came from Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm and or now many of the facilities where Audis are now produced all over the world be in Hungary, Belgium, Slovakia and even south of our border Mexico.

Our cars are an investment, many times a very significant one; they are of course Audis, clearly a reflection of us, who we are, how we want folks to see us and we want them to look their best so we not only take care of their mechanics, we spend time cleaning them and making them look their sharpest. Ensuring that spiders and tiny scratches are at a minimum, protect them from sea gull’s bombing runs and wipe them off after summer showers before the paint becomes watermarked under the Florida sun. If you count yourself as one of that crew who finds relaxation in detailing their car, then stepping back and viewing one’s accomplishment, make sure you sign up for the ACFL’s Show and Shine competition. This event is tailored for you. It is for Audis only and is open to both members and non-members of the ACFL. Additional registration details are above under the FixxFest article. The first prize is rather significant, pictured above and well worth the effort as is second and third. Be sure to join the fun and competition,

The Auto both Sits and Moves on a Continuum

Has Audi read some of our lips concerning the American market? Or even better some tea leaves? With all the pressure and winds blowing that the future is going electric and the plethora of EVs, CUVs and SUVs, then sales not in lockstep reflecting that trend, followed by suddenly seeing the debut of the RS 6 Avant and on its heels the A6 allroad, what can one say but WOW!!!. Now we know if you sit down and think of it, the automobile sits on a continuum that can range from that of an appliance at one end to a collector’s item at the other as exemplified above in the 1935 Audi and eventually when that appliance gets old enough someone will also collect it. Some folks do collect old toasters. A car is also treated differently and used as such by all of us as a means of not only transportation, work, trolling, sport, but also enjoyment, status, self-identification plus aggrandizement and for positive, productive and on occasion nefarious ends. I am talking about such things as running moonshine here as in the past, clean it up. So it was a long overdue marketing Hail Mary to finally bring these two European and popular iterations into the stateside mix considering both the present sales landscape and also that the TT, unfortunately, is not selling well here. It will not be continued after this model. In Europe, wagons, or estates as they are called in England are extremely popular.

Some will recall a little research we did about 18 months ago, the results were that 2% of our ACFL member would probably purchase an RS Avant and if that were to hold for the entire membership of ACNA that means most likely 200 have already been reserved by the 10,000 club members. Talk about a shot of adrenalin, too bad we will have to wait until next year, It will not be reflected in next month’ s sales but certainly in the wireless traffic in the ether.

Despite all the hype, high powered rather efficient fast cars still have a spot in the future for the auto market and Audi. In a recent close to a 390-mile trip back from Hilton Head, the RS 5 did it in one tank of gas, averaged close to 70 mph at just about 34 MPG. A high priced, high powered 2 door “economy car”. Remember the fresh egg on the gas pedal from high school driver’s education, it works. To digress a bit, I also vividly recall that the 58 slush box Ford driver’s education car had a brake pedal for the teacher, which he used on occasion. I spent a lot of time looking at the cheerleader in the back seat through the review mirror. So with a little effort and a lot more concentration then I spent back in the day, I would imagine the new RS 6 Avant’s numbers might be close considering that it is a mild hybrid and though wagons are heavy they are rather real-world aerodynamic.

As for the possibility in the future of EV’ being rammed down our throats like geese being prepped for the upcoming holiday seasonal feasts, some may prefer being one of those free-range hard to catch fast running capons and will have nothing to do with that forced fed program. I will let you epicureans out there debate the merits of goose schmaltz versus rendered chicken fat and onions on seasoned crostini.

That continuum within which the automobile rests, including the high horsepower, fossil-fueled iterations of the breed seem to be what some still pine for, all kids seem to love, and folks have yet to switch from and with regards to Audi can still be driven economically at speed on the highway. As a bit of schadenfreude, I look forward to the day when I return to the Gettysburg visitor’s center and park the RS 5 in that specially marked parking spot “Reserved for Economy Cars Only”. Just what is an economy car anyway?

Now for Some Fun and a Little Contest

We have not had a contest since there was some sleuthing on photo of a German training vessel, the sister ship to the USCG Eagle sitting in a Baltic port a few years back so now it is about time for another one. To the first four readers who send the correct answers to me at [email protected] you will receive one of our ACFL logo windows stickers pictured below:

Electronic postmark of the first four correct e-mailed answers will determine the four winners. Photographed below is a yellow/cream on blue 1935 Audi 225 Gläser Cabrio displayed in a German museum. The car is the same model as the one that is owned by the Tampa Bay Automobile Museum, which they will be displaying at FixxFest on November 16th at the ACFL venue.

The car is owned by Audi AG but is neither displayed at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt nor stored in building H at the Ingolstadt plant site, so those two places are not the correct answers. That should be a big hint. What is the name of the museum it is displayed in and where is the museum located. I need both for you to be one of our four winners. Four rings, four winners, it makes a lot of sense, right?

The first 4 correct answers receive one of the ACFL window stickers. Good luck and good researching.

photo: Bob Greving on location somewhere in Germany

But then, there is more….

Below is a great photo from one of our former BOD members and longtime ACFL members. It captures his R8 in front of the Washington Monument taken early one morning before being inundated with tourists, devoid of anyone, amazing how David managed that. Check out not only David’s report below but the story of the monument above and the geographic history of the area below. The monument was originally built near a landfill that in part bordered the Tiber creek long since gone and filled in along with the tidal flats and was probably a pretty swampy area along with what is now the National Mall.

David’s report:

The above is one of two Audis Margaret and I presently own.  This 2010 V8 R8 MT has been to more 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring than I can quickly recall, in addition to being tracked many times all over Florida and Georgia in our early years of ownership.  It is also our daily driver, although we don’t do much daily driving these days.  With almost 50,000 miles on the clock, its heart is still strong, with runs cross country to the 2018 ACNA Nationals in Tacoma WA, and a recent trip to run some twisty roads with the Audi Club of the Carolinas, before driving up to our Nation’s Capital. Like all of us, as we age, we do get a few replacement parts like joints (suspension), intestinal work (new transmission and clutch), but this R8 is a keeper.

David Loppert, October 2019

Looking forward to seeing many of you at FixxFest
