Find of the Day: 1991 Audi Coupe quattro S2/RS2-ish

words: Bill, photos: Bring A Trailer

First of all, I have to say this is how you do an ad for a car. Lots of details, lots of clear photos that are actually in focus. I’m kicking the idea around of picking up a car for my youngest son and the ads I’ve seen…well, let’s just say a kindergartner could do better.

Second, Holy Snikes!

This 1991 Coupe quattro showed up today on that fabulous website, Bring A Trailer. I really have to stop looking at BaT because it’s very tempting to blow the college fund for the aforementioned son.

While many will note that it is a salvage title (CarFax shows a salvage title issued in 1997 and rebuilt title in 2000/2015), there is an album that shows the refurbishment work done (even more photos). I’ll let the ad speak for itself:

This 1991 Audi quattro Coupe is powered by a 2.2L 20-valve inline-five paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and has been modified with S2/RS2 exterior and drivetrain components, Mercedes-Benz Mocha Black Metallic paint, a Volvo K24 turbocharger, Porsche 993 Turbo front brakes, a VEMS ECU tune, Koni suspension components, and more. The car has been with the seller for five years, and a service performed in January 2019 included an oil/filter change, spark plugs, and a coolant flush. This quattro Coupe is offered with a Carfax report, records, and a Nevada rebuilt title in the seller’s name.

A previous owner reportedly commissioned a respray in Mercedes-Benz Designo Mocha Black Metallic in 2008. Exterior modifications include S2 front and rear bumpers, a later hood, RS2 headlights, and smoked taillights with a European-market license plate surround. A photo album of refurbishment work can be viewed here.

The Audi 17″ x 8″ Avus wheels were sourced from a C5 S6 and wear Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 2 tires. Suspension modifications include Koni adjustable shocks, 2Bennett coilovers, 034Motorsport subframe mounts, and polyurethane bushings. The front brake calipers and rotors were sourced from a Porsche 993 Turbo, while the rear brakes and calipers are Audi S4 units. New tie rod ends, sway bar end links, ball joints, and wheel bearings were fitted under the seller’s ownership.

The cabin features replacement black leather seats sourced from an Audi RS6 with matching plastics and carpets, and is equipped with a power sunroof as well as an Audi Concert cassette player. Additional modifications include a 3-spoke S-Line steering wheel, European-market door panels, and a digital climate control unit.

The seller has replaced the dashboard and heater core with OEM units and installed new front and rear window seals. White-faced VDO gauges include a 6-digit mechanical odometer showing 125k chassis miles are shown, 6k of which have been added by the seller in five years. Total mileage is unknown.

The turbocharged, 20-valve 2.2L 3B inline-five was reportedly installed by the seller with 151k miles on it and has been modified with a Volvo S70R-sourced K24 turbo and VEMS engine management. The following service and modifications have been performed under the seller’s ownership:

    • New Continental timing belt and Graf water pump
    • MLS head gasket and ARP head bolts
    • 7A camshafts
    • New fuel pump and Siemens Deka 60lb/hr injectors
    • S2 ABY intercooler
    • 034Motorsport silicone boost hoses
    • 034Motorsport downpipe
    • Turbo Smart adjustable diverter valve
    • RS2 exhaust manifold to 3″ MagnaFlow system
    • OEM RS2 engine harness
    • 034Motorsport high-output ignition coils with new wires
    • Aluminum 74mm 3-row radiator, RS2 radiator shroud, 500W fan, Roose Motorsport silicone coolant hoses, Behr reservoir
    • New rear crank seal with sensor
    • 034Motorsport poly snub mount
    • Battery relocated to trunk

Power is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission featuring a lightened and balanced 7A flywheel and a Stage 3 clutch. An S2-style ABY crossmember has also been fitted. Additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery below along with a full modification list from the seller.

The Carfax report shows history in Massachusetts, California, and Nevada, listing salvage titles issued from 1997 to 2000 and rebuilt titles from then on. Cold start, warm start, and drive-by videos are viewable below.

When I found the ad about an hour ago, the bid was about $1,600. At the time of writing, it’s up to $4,200. Bidding ends in 7 days and you can find the ad HERE. I’ll be curious where it ends up. My youngest will understand that college may not be all that it’s cracked up to be.
