Find of the Day: 1991 Audi 200 Avant quattro Turbo

words: Bill, photos: The Classic Car Gallery

People will look back at 2020 as the Year of the Pandemic but it could also be called the Year of the Avant. The mighty RS 6 Avant finally landed on NA shores and the A6 allroad made a comeback. So you can say long roof fans are all anog over Avants. That brings us to today’s Find of the Day. This 200 Avant may look familiar to some as it was a Bring A Trailer car back in March of this year and it sold for $12,200. It now resides at The Classic Car Gallery in Connecticut and is again for sale. Here’s the ad:

1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro Avant. Very rare one year only model 1 of 150, one of the best. Gorgeous car!!

The car on offer here is a 1991 Audi 200 Turbo Quattro Avant Quattro. Originally sold by Carousel Automobiles in Minneapolis, Minnesota, it has spent time in Montana, Connecticut and California, before it was re-acquired by the seller in Connecticut; an Audi collector (he had 17 at one point!!) who re-acquired the car after selling it to the owner in California two years earlier.

The car is very original, finished in Pearl White Metallic over black leather interior, and power is provided by the ubiquitous Audi turbocharged 2.2L 20v inline-five, mated to a five-speed manual transaxle and Quattro all-wheel drive. The car has had some sensible modifications, including, but not limited to, ARP head studs, a SPEC clutch, 16″ UrS4 Fuchs wheels, Bilstein shocks, and a Magnaflow muffler. In March of 2019 the car received a new turbocharger, a new oxygen sensor and battery, and new factory and fuel injectors. Now showing 154,100 miles, this 200 Avant is in wonderful condition.

PAINT: The car is finished in its correct Pearl White Metallic, and options include a rear wiper, rear Quattro-script defroster, roof rails, sunroof, and clear film applied to the headlights. The paint is excellent with only minor rock chips around the car. The Carfax (available upon request) is clean. The original factory alloys have been replaced by 16″ Fuchs wheels from a UrS4 (stock wheels are included with the car). They were refinished and are shod with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires fitted in September 2018. In September 2018, 2Bennett Audimotive in Davis, California replaced the master cylinder, rear brake calipers, adjusted the parking brake cable, along with an alignment and brake fluid flush. In 2016, Bilstein shock absorbers were added, and new strut bellows and strut bearings were also installed.

INTERIOR: The Black leather power adjustable seats are heated and feature memory settings for the driver. Additional amenities include wood trim, power windows, air conditioning (blows cold) and cruise control. The center console includes the differential activation switch and indicator; the window switch was replaced in September 2018. The original radio is present and works well. The wood trim shows some cracks. The six-digit odometer shows 154,100 miles. The original turbocharged 2.2L 20v 3B inline-five is mated to a five-speed manual transaxle with a SPEC Stage 2+ clutch and Quattro all-wheel drive.

The maintenance log indicates the timing belt service was completed in September 2016 at 147k miles, and a replacement head gasket and APR head studs were installed in 2017. The clutch was replaced 10k miles ago, and service in March 2019 at 2Bennett Automotive included replacing the turbocharger, fitting a new oxygen sensor and battery and injectors. A modified exhaust with Magnaflow muffler offers a nice but unobtrusive growl.

Buy with confidence, as this car has been collector owned, comes with all factory books and manuals, service records, maintenance log and service records from new and needs nothing except an enthusiastic new owner/collector. The car comes with a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title. Feel free to call 203 256 9800 or email [email protected] if we can answer any of your questions.

I had to go back through our archives to make sure I didn’t post this before and obviously, I hadn’t…which is a shame because it’s a beautiful Avant. But here it is, albeit a couple of thousand dollars more. It’s listed at $15,900 which isn’t hateful for a rare Avant in even rarer condition. You can find a lot more photos and even a video on the BAT listing (which is still live). I would so tempted to buy this but if it was black on black, it would be in my driveway right now. If you missed the Bring A Trailer auction back in March and would love a great condition 200 Avant Turbo quattro (or is it 200 Avant quattro Turbo?), you can find it HERE. Thanks George for the heads up…it made my morning.
