Find of the Day: 1983 Audi 100 Camper by Bischofberger
From the so rare we’ve not seen one on the market before department comes this 1983 Audi 100 camper conversion. We’ve found it on the European classifieds site Mobile.de, and it’s definitely the perfect gift for the horder of old Audi automobiles in your life who has everything. We’re guessing said horder doesn’t have one of these.
What the heck is Bischofberger you ask? Back in the 1980s, Bischofberger Motorcaravan GmbH had built a cottage business on converting cars to campers. They’d found some success with the Audi 100 C2 (type 43) and moved on to doing the same for the Audi 100 C3 (type 44) you see here. Tested in the desert and certified through TUV, the Bischofberger Audi 100 camper was perhaps a more luxurious offering than other period offerings like the Volkswagen van.

The cars were built with a reinforced tubular structure, upgraded suspension and brakes, plus that unmistakable living compartment expansion made of fiberglass that increased the length only by about four inches.
Beyond the additional luxury of an Audi C-segment sedan, one of the biggest benefits of the Audi-based camper from Bischofberger was a lower center of gravity than conversion vans and buses.

Was it successful? Well, only about 40 were ever built so when they hit market as this one has, it’s worth noting to the crowd who will see the value in this quirky rad-era camper.
Here’s what we know about this one. It’s covered 175,000 km (108,739 miles), which isn’t a lot for a camper. It’s got a manual transmission and has been converted to also run on natural gas as have a lot of cars in Europe. It’s currently located in Medebech, Germany (about two hours north of Frankfurt). Critically, it’s also old enough for easy importation and registration in the U.S.A. or Canada.
