Ferdi Porsche knows his roots. This grandson of Ferdinand Porsche was a regular at his family’s second home on Lake Zell near Gmünd and knew well of the ice racing there that dated back to 1952. Today, it’s known as the F.A.T. Ice Race, revived by Ferdi several years ago, and just this year expanded to America.

This being a family affair, it’s not surprising that Audi is a significant and regular supporter of the event. Over the years they’ve brought all sorts of cars to compete, from Auto Unions (designed by the original Ferdinand Porsche) to the S1 Hoonitron. Ken Block even jumped an RS Q e-tron there.
So, when Ferdi decided to take the event to America and specifically the renowned ski resort of Vail, Colorado, he lobbied Audi Tradition to bring something cool. They obliged with the 90 IMSA GTO and Michèle Mouton’s S1 Sport quattro that had a Coloradan back story of its own.

You can find more on the FAT Ice Race HERE, but it’s worth mentioning here its significance. Advocates such as Ferdi Porsche helping bring these cars out helps pay further dividends with their presence at places like The Amelia (pp. 50-52) or our Mobile Museum events (pp. 53-54).
