It has been widely reported that Audi is working hard to turn things around and recapture some of the greatness of the past. They are launching a stream of new models and they have several exciting concepts in the pipeline. They are also taking part in this little race series known as Formula 1. But as Carbuzz reports, Audi is getting serious about innovation as well with 1,912 patent applications filed with the German DPMA last year.

Audi ranks fourth in patent applications filed by a German company in 2025. That is a quantifiable sign that ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ is back at the forefront at Audi. That being said, the top three spots are held by Robert Bosch, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. So, they still trail their biggest German rivals, but they are on the right path. In 2024, Audi filed 1,058 patents, which was good for ninth on the list. 2025 saw that number nearly double.

At the recent Annual Media Conference, CEO Gernot Döllner called out the need for innovation to be a driving force once again. “The industry — and Germany as a whole — needs to reinvent itself. Today, the US and China are driving the major technology trends, while Germany and Europe have fallen behind. Innovation for customers must therefore become the top priority again,” said Döllner.

From a product perspective, the next big change is going to come in the form of the Audi Concept C. It is going to set a whole new direction for the brand. From the design inside and out, to the technology within, the Concept C will represent the new Audi.

Audi has the fans that is has largely because it has been seen as an innovator through the years. From the famous quattro all-wheel drive system to the Audi Space Frame and LED lighting, Audi has lead the way. It is time to get some of that mojo back and filing nearly 2,000 patents in a year is a good way to do it.
