Audi Files Patent for Advanced Off-Road Suspension Tech

News from Hotcars reports that Audi has submitted a new patent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that points to the development of an innovative active chassis system designed for off-road use, potentially signaling a shift toward more trail-capable production vehicles, previewed by the Q6 e-tron Offroad Concept.

The system allows drivers to manually control suspension articulation and stiffness through an in-cabin interface, such as a slider or knob. This tech would enable real-time suspension adjustments for varied terrain, offering a blend of added ground clearance, improved traction, and customizable ride quality, all without physical modifications or tools.

The timing of the patent is notable, as it closely preceded the debut of the Q6 e-tron Offroad Concept, and follows Audi’s growing off-road presence with vehicles like the RS Q e-tron, which has competed in the grueling Dakar Rally. The patented technology could be key in bringing similar capabilities to future electric or hybrid models aimed at adventurous drivers.

While it’s not yet confirmed for production, this move strongly suggests Audi is exploring a broader role in the off-road segment, potentially setting its sights on rivals like Land Rover and Jeep. If the system makes it into future models, it could redefine what’s expected from German engineering in rugged environments.
