Editor’s Note: On March 16, we received an update from Audi of America confirming that the A8 will remain on sale for the foreseeable future in the U.S.

If you are interested in ordering a new Audi A8, you had better hurry. According to a report by Motor1, the order books for the A8 in Germany closed on February 18. There are no definitive plans for a replacement right now either.

Audi has quietly closed the order books for its flagship Audi A8 in Germany, signaling that the end may be near for the brand’s long-running luxury sedan. The move was first noticed when the A8 disappeared from Audi’s German configurator, prompting confirmation from the automaker. According to Audi spokesperson Marcel Bestle, customers were able to configure the final A8 models until February 18.

Other Markets

While the sedan can no longer be ordered in its home market, Audi says availability in other regions will depend on existing inventory levels and various market factors. The company has not announced an official end date for production, but the closure of orders in Germany strongly suggests the current generation is approaching the end of its lifecycle.

For now, the future of Audi’s flagship remains uncertain. With the A8 no longer configurable where it was born, it appears to be only a matter of time before production of the luxury sedan finally comes to an end.

The Future

Although the future of the Audi A8 remains uncertain, there are still reasons for cautious optimism. Bestle told Motor1 that the company “will communicate further details about a possible successor at a later date.” However, possible doesn’t mean definite. At this point, it’s not clear whether Audi has officially approved a next-generation A8. The lack of spy photos or prototype sightings suggests that if a new model is coming, it’s still several years away from reaching showrooms.

There are also technical and regulatory hurdles to consider. Last October, German publication Automobilwoche reported that Audi was actively searching for a suitable platform for a potential next-generation A8. Another facelift for the current Audi A8 D5 was reportedly ruled out, largely because tightening emissions regulations would make it difficult to justify further updates. With the upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards set to demand significantly cleaner engines, any future A8 will likely require an all-new technical foundation to meet those stricter requirements.

Goodbye Audi A8. It was fun while it lasted.
