There has been quite a bit of speculation about the future of the Audi A8 recently. Audi recently closed the order books in Germany on the current sedan flagship. However, Audi of America confirmed for us earlier this week that the A8 will remain on sale in the U.S. for the foreseeable future. Now, Motor1 is reporting that an Audi A8 successor will be revealed towards the end of this decade.
We know that we are getting the new Audi Q9 soon and it will serve as the flagship SUV in Audi’s lineup. Motor1 reached out to Audi to ask if the new Q9 would be the replacement for the A8 when it winds up production. They heard back from A8 spokesperson Marcel Bestle on the subject.
A8 Decision
“The decision on an A8 successor has been taken and we intend to present it towards the end of this decade. We are going to communicate further details in due course. The Audi Q9 is going to expand the Audi portfolio at the top as large full-size SUV,” said Bestle.
So, a decision has been made, and we will see the new vehicle sometime in the next four years. However, the statement from Bestle doesn’t say much about what the next A8 will be. Saying that the Q9 will expand the Audi portfolio suggests that it will not be used as a replacement for another model such as the A8. But could the A8 be reinvented as an SUV? It is unlikely but anything is possible.
Back in 2021 Audi unveiled the grandsphere concept at the IAA show. It was touted as a “private jet for the road” with plenty of space and luxury for a family of four. It was just a concept like the other “sphere” vehicles that Audi revealed around that time. However, it did at least hint at a shape that could work on the next A8. But that was five years ago now and the current D5-generation A8 has been with us since 2019.
The good news is that it appears that Audi is expected to give us a new A8 of some sort and the model is not dead. And by the time it is revealed it will likely follow the design language set by the Concept C. What we don’t know for certain is if the next-gen A8 will remain a sedan or morph into an SUV and what type of powertrain it will use. Be patient, the end of the decade will be here before you know it.
