Find of the Day: 1,155-HP Land Speed Record 1993 Audi S4 Up for Bids
Over the years we have shared countless Audi’s in our ‘Find of the Day’ feature. They have all been exceptional cars, but none of them were like this incredible 261-mph 1993 Audi S4 that is currently offered on Cars & Bids.
This car is not just a find of the day it is the find of everyday. Do you want some stats? It makes 1,155 horsepower and 706 pound-feet of torque. In 2012, it set a land speed record for sedans at the Bonneville Salt Flats with an average speed over one mile of 236 mph. It was crowned the world’s fastest sedan that same year when it reached 250.009 mph. The ultimate top speed is estimated to be even higher at 261 mph. That is faster than a Peregrine falcon in a dive.
Engine Modifications
The car can achieve this remarkable speed thanks to its remarkable engine. Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine. That engine is force-fed air by a massive Borg Warner S400SX turbocharger. To make sure the engine can handle the power the internals have seen extensive upgrades including a billet 92.8-millimeter crankshaft, Auto Verdi connecting rods, a billet-machined Wiseco 81.5-millimeter pistons, a custom-made cylinder head with extra-large ports and more.
The engine gets its fuel via a pair of Bosch 044 fuel pumps that feed Injector Dynamics ID1700 fuel injectors. Helping to keep things cool is an air-to-ice intercooler with a 35-gallon ice tank. A Drivesport 6-speed manual gearbox with a Tilton Engineering clutch kit, a 60-2 billet flywheel and a custom rear transmission mount sends the power to Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system.
Exterior Modifications
This remarkable 1993 Audi S4 has more than just engine and transmission upgrades. Setting land speed records takes more than that. The car rides on an aftermarket coilover suspension and 17-inch Kosei Racing wheels. Drag is the enemy of speed, so this car wears a custom aero kit. It also had the door mirrors removed. What do you need mirrors for anyway? Nothing is going to be catching you!
The sunroof has been blocked off and the glass windows have been replaced with fire-resistant and shatter-proof composite. Take a peek under the car and you will find custom underbody panels. Up top are custom roof rails. Oh, and did we mention the rear-mounted parachute?
Inside the World’s Fastest Sedan
Inside the car you will find that the passenger-side front seat, rear seats, center console, trim and carpet have been removed. There is a Cobra Seats driver’s seat, a MOMO Race steering wheel and auxiliary gauges. Above all, safety is key so a 6-point roll cage and an on-board fire suppression system is also installed.
Known Flaws
Besides this car not sitting in our garage right now, there are a couple of other flaws noted in the auction listing. The odometer no longer works. It currently shows about 158,400 miles. There are some exterior chips and scratches on the paint. The front turn signal lenses have cracks in them. The tires have 2019 date codes so you will want to replace them before your next 250 mph run. And there is some wear on the driver’s seat and interior touch points.
On the plus side, the seller states that the engine and the turbo were replaced within the last year. And somewhat remarkably, the car comes with a clean, accident-free Carfax report. A spare Borg Warner S400SX turbocharger, a spare set of wheels and tires and a battery charger are also included.
Auction Details
The auction listing includes several videos of this incredible 1993 Audi S4 in action. There is also the rather humorous note from the seller that this car “may not pass emissions testing in some states.” We can just imagine rolling up to your local Audi dealer asking for a state inspection for this beast.
We are excited to share this incredible auction find with you. However, we are a bit sad because we don’t know if we can ever top it. Of course, we will try our best. Bidding ends Thursday, August 14.
