The Car That Made quattro a Household Name
How Audi’s groundbreaking Ur-quattro revolutionized rally racing, redefined performance, and sparked a legacy that still powers the brand today.
“It didn’t just conquer rally stages—it changed what performance meant on any road. The original Audi quattro didn’t follow trends. It created them.”
Before Audi’s quattro system became a defining trait of the brand—appearing across nearly every vehicle in the lineup—it started with one revolutionary coupe. The Audi quattro, known by fans as the Ur-quattro (“Ur” meaning “original” in German), wasn’t just ahead of its time; it rewrote the rulebook on how power should be delivered to pavement, gravel, snow, and everything in between.
In a retrospective originally published in MotorTrend, journalist Matt Stone dives deep into the engineering breakthroughs, rallying legacy, and visceral driving feel of the original quattro. Here are just a few highlights we enjoyed:
“Launched in the spring of 1980, the Audi quattro… came to the U.S. market for the 1982 model year. Until then, AWD had been the provenance of big trucks and serious off-roaders. The genius of the quattro was in compact differentials that would fit the confines of a passenger car, without the quantum increase in ride height.”
Audi’s vision, led by engineering legends like Joerg Bensinger, Walter Treser, and Ferdinand Piëch, brought the quattro concept to life. It wasn’t just a drivetrain—it was a philosophy of grip, balance, and confidence.
The quattro’s success wasn’t limited to the road—it dominated in rally. In 1981, it won at San Remo on debut. By 1982, Audi had claimed eight overall wins and was on its way to rewriting the WRC record books with legends like Michèle Mouton and Walter Röhrl behind the wheel.
The madness reached its peak with the Sport quattro S1, Audi’s fire-breathing, wide-bodied, short-wheelbase Group B icon. With nearly 600 horsepower and radical aero, it became a Pikes Peak legend—setting records that stood for years.
