Wheatley Embraces Momentum as Sauber Prepares for Audi F1 Debut

Motorsport.com reports that Sauber Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley is riding high after a strong mid-season surge, just as the team ramps up for its transformation into Audi’s official Formula 1 entry in 2026. Since joining in April from Red Bull, Wheatley has overseen key milestones, including Nico Hülkenberg’s long-awaited first podium at Silverstone and Gabriel Bortoleto’s first F1 points in Austria.

Speaking at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Wheatley praised the groundwork laid by COO Mattia Binotto and emphasized the growing confidence within the team. “You can see it in the garage, in the pit stops, there’s belief and team spirit building,” he said.

Despite knowing the road ahead will be tough with new 2026 regulations and fierce competition, Wheatley sees the Audi project as one of the most exciting in modern F1. “I grew up watching Audi Quattros tearing through forests. Now I get to help shape their future in Formula 1.

With momentum on their side and Audi’s full backing, Wheatley is optimistic: “Very soon I’ll have four rings on my shirt and I’ll be the happiest team principal in F1.”
