Just Who are These Other Guys?
Words: Steve Johnson
If you’re a fan of Audi’s past racing successes, I’m sure you know who Hans Stuck (the elder) and Bernd Rosemeyer are. Hopefully you’ve read about them in past quattro Magazine issues, perhaps in issue Q4_2024, on how the Auto Union’s Silver Arrows did in their first season of grand prix racing in 1934. You might also recognize the names Achille Varzi and Tazio Nuvolari. Already successful grand prix drivers in their own right, they joined the Auto Union race team in 1935 and 1938, respectively.

But if you’re a true motorsports fan you also need to know about the team members who accompanied the team’s stars on the racing grid. Guys like Prinz Hermann zu Leiningen, August “Bubi” Momberger, Ernst Burggaller, Wilhelm Sebastian, Paul Pietsch, Ernst von Delius, Rudolf Hasse, Hermann Paul “H.P.” Mueller, Georg “Schorsch” Meier, and Ulrich Bigalke. These are The Other Guys and each one of them had a unique involvement with Auto Union. Some successful, some scandalous, some tragic, but each interesting. You can read about them in quattro Magazine issue Q2_2025 now on-line and coming very soon to your mailbox.

If you haven’t fully explored our new website yet, you might be asking, “Where can I find this story?” First, click the Profile image on the top right of the website to sign in. Next, select “Content” on the navigation menu, then hover over “quattro Magazine (Blog)” to see Current Issue and Archives. Select either one to open them both.
Magazine issues dating back to 2010 can be found in the archives, and they are fun to read. (I just learned something I didn’t know while writing this blog post.) When you select the current issue, I recommend reading it in full screen mode.
If you don’t see the options described, it means you aren’t an Audi Club North America member… yet. So, like it says on our website’s home page, Join the Club and get full access to a wealth of Club content.
As always, thanks for reading!
