Wolfsburg, Germany – The ZeitHaus der Autostadt in Wolfsburg celebrates a special anniversary in August: The Audi 50, which revolutionized the automotive world from 1974 as an innovative compact car, is presented as the classic of the month. Visitors can now experience it and learn more about its design and technical innovations.

Why is the Audi 50 considered a milestone in automotive history? It was the first German small car with a transversely installed four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive, it set new standards. His large tailgate and outstanding driving culture made him a trendsetter in terms of functionality and comfort in his class – he was the first to combine middle-class characteristics with small car format and served as a model for subsequent “small big ones”.

The start of production of the Audi 50 took place in Wolfsburg in 1974. In 1975, the production start of the technically identical but simply equipped Volkswagen Polo with a 40 hp base engine followed. While the Audi 50 did not find a direct successor, the Polo established itself in the Volkswagen product range. In total, around 181,000 Audi 50 were presented between 1974 and 1978.

Technical data of the exhibited Audi 50 in the ZeitHaus: In-line four-cylinder with front-wheel drive, 1,093 cm³, 44 kW/60 hp at 6,000/min, a maximum speed of 152 km/h and a then original price of 8,510 DM (for the 60 hp version GL).

The ZeitHaus can be visited daily during the opening hours of the Autostadt with a valid daily or annual ticket.
