2026 China Car of the Year Goes to AUDI E5 Sportback

The first China-exclusive AUDI, the E5 Sportback, has been a major success. And the hits just keep on coming for the all-electric Sportback. It was recently announced that it has won the won the prestigious 2026 China Car of the Year award.

The AUDI E5 Sportback becomes the first model from a newly launched brand to win this honor just one year after its debut. Combining Audi’s engineering heritage with China’s advanced digital ecosystem, the E5 Sportback is tailored to the expectations of a new generation of Chinese buyers. The AUDI brand has quickly carved out a unique position in China’s premium EV market by blending German performance with local innovation. Since launching, the E5 Sportback has also earned multiple industry awards, including 2025 Most Popular Premium Car, Intelligent Premium Sedan of the Year, Best Handling Sedan of the Year, and Best Design Sedan of the Year.

The four-door AUDI E5 Sportback is a fully electric fastback with sleek, performance-focused proportions, producing up to 776 horsepower and offering a maximum driving range of about 478 miles. Buyers can choose from four powertrain options with either rear-wheel drive or Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive, with the quickest versions sprinting from 0–62 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Built on Audi’s new Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP), the E5 Sportback also introduces next-generation connectivity and full over-the-air software updates.

The AUDI brand’s first model has earned strong market recognition by excelling in four key areas: a distinctive, forward-looking design; engaging driving performance that carries Audi’s DNA while redefining electric driving enjoyment; premium materials and a calm, refined cabin; and a strong focus on safety, with advanced driver-assistance systems standard across the lineup.

The AUDI brand launched in Shanghai in November 2024, with the E5 Sportback becoming its first production model in April 2025. Manufacturing began in August at a dedicated Shanghai facility built to Audi’s global standards, with orders opening the same day. Deliveries followed the official market launch in September. In November 2025, AUDI previewed its electric SUV future with the E SUV concept, which will enter production as the E7X in 2026.
